This November, after three full years of waiting, fans of FX’s “Fargo” will be treated to a brand new season. Unlike the anthology series’ fourth iteration, which served as a prequel to its first two, the upcoming fifth batch of episodes will tell an entirely original Midwestern crime story. Leading the season’s star-studded cast is Jon Hamm, who has his sights set on earning his first Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor Golden Globe nomination this winter. Since he was already honored in the corresponding drama series category for “Mad Men” in 2008 and 2016, his possible new victory would make him the seventh man to clinch Golden Globes for performances on both continuing and non-continuing TV programs.

Hamm, who picked up four additional Golden Globe bids for “Mad Men” between 2009 and 2013, has already begun his splashy 2023 return to prestige TV by playing a new supporting role on the third season of “The Morning Show.” He will make his “Fargo” debut on November 21 by embodying Roy Tillman, a contemporary North Dakota sheriff who has spent years tracking down a wanted criminal posing as a harmless housewife (Juno Temple). This marks the actor’s third collaboration with series creator, writer and director Noah Hawley, following the FX show “Legion” and the 2019 theatrical film “Lucy in the Sky.”

Hamm, whose Gold Derby odds are stronger than all but one of his potential Golden Globe challengers (Steven Yeun, “Beef”), has a unique advantage in this lead race in that two “Fargo” stars have already been lauded by this organization’s voters. By emulating the achievements of respective first and third season cast members Billy Bob Thornton (2015) and Ewan McGregor (2018), he could boost the series toward the distinction of being the first non-continuing program to produce three Golden Globe wins in a single acting category.

To date, eight different performers have received Golden Globe notices for the show, including lead actors Martin Freeman (2015) and Patrick Wilson (2016), lead actresses Allison Tolman (2015) and Kirsten Dunst (2016), and supporting actors Colin Hanks (2015) and David Thewlis (2018).

Because he also took the 2017 Best TV Drama Actor prize for “Goliath,” Thornton belongs to said group of six actors who have won Golden Globes for limited and continuing programs. In terms of format, the chronological order of his victories matches those of three other club members: Ted Danson (limited: “Something About Amelia,” 1985; continuing: “Cheers,” 1990-1991), Michael Douglas (“Behind the Candelabra,” 2014; “The Kominsky Method,” 2019) and Kevin Costner (“Hatfields & McCoys,” 2013; “Yellowstone,” 2023). The two earliest entrants, who both happened to achieve their continuing series wins first, were Mickey Rooney (“Mickey,” 1964; “Bill,” 1982) and Richard Chamberlain (“Dr. Kildare,” 1963; “The Thorn Birds,” 1984).

Since he could also receive a supporting nomination for “The Morning Show,” Hamm has a shot at becoming the seventh man to compete for two TV acting Golden Globes at once. Counting actresses, the list of performers who have simultaneously been recognized for limited and continuing series work presently consists of just five names: Danson (1985 – “Something About Amelia”; “Cheers”), Dabney Coleman (1988 – “Sworn to Silence”; “The Slap Maxwell Story”), Donald Sutherland (2006 – “Human Trafficking”; “Commander in Chief”), Anna Paquin (2010 – “The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler”; “True Blood”) and Julia Garner (2023 – “Inventing Anna”; “Ozark”). Since none of them managed to win both awards at once, Hamm’s highly feasible triumphs on both of his potential bids would earn him quite a prime spot in the Golden Globes record book.
