Jon Hamm knew exactly who he wanted to channel when it came to voicing his character Detective Marvin Flute on the new animated series Grimsburg.

On the Fox show, the Mad Men alum, 52, voices “the greatest detective ever to catch a cannibal clown or correctly identify a mid-century modern armoire,” according to the show synopsis.

Hamm tells PEOPLE that several elements went into finding the voice of the detective, who has a beer belly and mustache, explaining, "Part of it was understanding that he was going to look like that. Part of it was understanding that he's probably not getting a lot of sleep, and part of it was trying to find something that sounded pretty funny, and the biggest part of it was I just always, whenever I'm asked to do a voice, I just imitate Will Arnett.”

He adds: “That takes care of most of the decision making.”

The Morning Show actor praises Arnett’s voiceover talents, which have been showcased in movies including The Lego Movie, Despicable Me, and Horton Hears a Who!.

“There's a funny thing about Will, who once you hear his voice, you can't not hear his voice, and he'll say the same thing,” Hamm says of Arnett, 53. “He's been working in the voiceover and animation world forever, and I love how his voice sounds, and I probably owe him royalties at this point, but he's the number one guy for me. I think his voice is just super resonant.”

“The funny thing about Will is that he's trying to do an impression of me and it just sounds like him,” he jokingly adds.

Hamm is also slated to reunite with his Mad Men costar Christina Hendricks, who will guest star on the first season of Grimsburg.

“Christina also has one of those amazing voices as well,” Hamm, who also serves as an executive producer on the series, says. “It just happens to be packaged in the package that she also brings to it, but her voice is amazing.”

“I think she's done quite a bit of work in this space, so it was a great pleasure for her to say yes, honestly. I cold called her and said, ‘Would you consider doing this? And it might be fun and funny for people to hear that,’ and it has been so far.”
