FX’s “Fargo” is facing some tough competition at the Golden Globes this year in the form of Netflix’s “Beef.” Noah Hawley‘s anthology limited series follows a different cast and storyline every season with the latest installment, the fifth season, featuring the likes of Jon Hamm, Juno Temple, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. This story follows a kidnapping gone wrong that leads to implications for many.

This season has fared well, garnering three Golden Globe nominations: Best Limited Series/TV Movie, Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor for Hamm, and Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress for Temple. These two acting bids add to the Golden Globes history of “Fargo,” which has often done well in snagging nominations for its cast. Here’s the breakdown.

More from GoldDerby

The first season saw Billy Bob Thornton win Best Limited Series/TV Movie in 2015 while co-star Martin Freeman was also nominated in the same category. Allison Tolman was nominated for Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress but lost to Maggie Gyllenhaal for “The Honourable Woman.” And Colin Hanks lost Best Supporting TV Actor to Matt Bomer for “The Normal Heart.”

“Fargo” season two garnered two nominations in 2016. Patrick Wilson was recognized for Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor but lost to Oscar Isaac for “Show Me a Hero” while Kirsten Dunst was nominated in the lead actress category but lost to Lady Gaga for “American Horror Story: Hotel.”

In 2018, season three also saw the Globes nominate it for two acting bids. Ewan McGregor won Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor while David Thewlis was nominated for Best Supporting TV Actor but lost to Alexander Skarsgård for “Big Little Lies.”

“Fargo” season four, which starred Chris Rock, Ben Whishaw, Jessie Buckley, and Jason Schwartzman, was the only entry of the FX series not to secure any Golden Globe nominations. However, this fifth season rectified that by landing the three aforementioned bids including two nominations for acting. Thornton and McGregor are the show’s two acting winners at the Golden Globes and both won the same category — Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor.

Could Hamm join them as the show’s third acting winner? Hamm is nominated alongside Steven Yeun (“Beef”), Matt Bomer (“Fellow Travelers”), David Oyelowo (“Lawmen: Bass Reeves”), Sam Claflin (“Daisy Jones and the Six”), and Woody Harrelson (“White House Plumbers”).

Yeun may have something to say about Hamm winning. “The Walking Dead” alum stars in “Beef,” which depicts how a small feud can ignite into a deadly game of revenge and destruction. Yeun is our current predicted winner in this category. However, he has never won a Golden Globe before while Hamm, who is in second place in our Golden Globes odds chart, is an HFPA favorite.

He won Best TV Drama Actor twice for “Mad Men” — in 2008 and 2016. He was also nominated for the same category and show in 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2013. This is his seventh total nomination while Yeun’s “Beef” bid is his first. Yeun could fall victim to Hamm’s status and reputation as one of TV’s finest actors, especially because three of the last four winners of this category have been performers who had already been nominated for or won a Golden Globe: Michael Keaton in 2022 for “Dopesick,” Mark Ruffalo in 2021 for “I Know This Much is True,” and Russell Crowe in 2020 for “The Loudest Voice.” The exception was Evan Peters, who won in 2023 for “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.”

Meanwhile, Temple is nominated alongside Ali Wong (“Beef”), Brie Larson (“Lessons in Chemistry”), Riley Keough (“Daisy Jones and the Six”), Rachel Weisz (“Dead Ringers”), Elizabeth Olsen (“Love and Death”). Again, the “Beef” performer is the favorite to win this award. Temple is in fourth spot in our odds category behind Wong, Larson, and Keough.

However, Temple is enjoying something of a moment after her star turn in “Ted Lasso.” She received three bids for Best Comedy Supporting Actress in 2021, 2022, and 2023 at the Emmys so voters clearly like her. That love has never translated into a Golden Globe nomination, however, as this is her first bid. It’s also Wong’s first bid. If anyone is going to take down Wong, it’s likely to be Larson as she is an A-list film star — Globe voters like that profile of performer in this category as proven by recent winners such as Amanda Seyfried (“The Dropout”), Kate Winslet (“Mare of Easttown”), Michelle Williams (“Fosse/Verdon”), and Nicole Kidman (“Big Little Lies”).
