Jon Hamm was nearly cast as Nick Dunne in the 2014 David Fincher thriller Gone Girl.

One of Fincher’s most famous films is Gone Girl, a psychological thriller starring Rosamund Pike as Amy Dunne, a woman who goes missing, and the media attention that surrounds her husband Nick (Ben Affleck) in her disappearance. It is widely known as one of Affleck’s strongest performances, but the role nearly went to someone else.

Mad Men star Jon Hamm was originally going to play the character. “I was down to the very end of that,” Hamm said on an episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. “It was meant to be me, but we had to film the continuing adventures of Mr. Draper.”

A 2015 Page Six report detailed that Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner wouldn’t let him out of his contractual obligations to portraying Don Draper, forcing him to drop out of the role of Nick in Gone Girl.

What is Jon Hamm’s latest movie?

He will appear in Maggie Moore(s), a black comedy starring alongside Tina Fey and Nick Mohammed. In 2022, Hamm portrayed Vice Admiral Beau “Cyclone” Simpson in the Oscar-winning film Top Gun: Maverick.
