Joker: Folie à Deux, Todd Phillips’ musical follow-up to his 2019 DC film, has landed an R rating from the Motion Picture Association (MPA).

In its ratings bulletin published this morning, the association said the film is “Rated R for some strong violence, language throughout, some sexuality, and brief full nudity.”

Phillips’ first Joker outing also clocked an R rating and made history when it crossed  $788.1M worldwide, surpassing Deadpool to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.

Joaquin Phoenix reprises the titular role as Arther Fleck (aka Joker) in Folie à Deux. His first outing in 2019 received critical acclaim. His performance won him an Academy Award for Best Actor, with the film garnering 11 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for Todd Phillips. Starring alongside Phoenix is Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, his love interest and partner in crime. The sequel’s cast also includes Catherine Keener, Brendan Gleeson, and Zazie Beetz.

Plot details on the sequel have been scant, but yesterday, an audio recording of Lady Gaga in character was dropped on TikTok by Warner Bros.

“You can do anything you want… you’re Joker,” Gaga as Harley Quinn is heard saying in a TikTok video shared by the official movie’s account.

The preview was dropped the same day that the key art for the sequel film was released. The poster shows Phoenix’s Joker dipping Gaga’s Harley Quinn amid a dance.

“The world is a stage,” reads the caption for the poster.

The film’s first trailer is to be released on April 9.
