"Four years ago we had quite a ride. Lots of great memories," the filmmaker wrote on Instagram to commemorate the anniversary

Todd Phillips is celebrating four years since the premiere of Joker.

To mark the occasion on Wednesday, the 52-year-old director shared a photo to Instagram of Joaquin Phoenix as the title character Arthur Fleck/Joker, staring up into the rain with his eyes closed while surrounded by umbrellas in an array of colors.

"Oct. 4. Thanks for all the messages. Four years ago we had quite a ride. Lots of great memories. More to come," Phillips wrote in the caption.

The latter part of his comment appeared to be a tease for his upcoming musical sequel Joker: Folie à Deux, which will see Phoenix, 48, reprise his sinister role, this time alongside Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn.

The film is set to be released on Oct. 4, 2024 — which is also, notably, Joker's five-year anniversary.

Following the success of Joker, which included setting worldwide box-office records and receiving two Oscar wins (including the coveted Best Actor prize for Phoenix), a follow-up film was officially confirmed in June 2022.

That same month, PEOPLE confirmed that Gaga, 37, was in talks to play Dr. Harleen "Harley Quinn" Quinzel. The first outlet to share the news, The Hollywood Reporter said that Gaga's Harley would exist "in a different DC universe" than the one played by Margot Robbie in Suicide Squad (2016), Birds of Prey (2020) and The Suicide Squad (2020).

Phillips also co-wrote the sequel's script alongside Scott Silver, and produced with Bradley Cooper (who previously starred opposite Gaga in A Star Is Born).

Additional cast members include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland and Harry Lawtey. Zazie Beetz will also reprise her role as Sophie Dumond from the first film.

Phoenix was first spotted on the set of the new film in Los Angeles back in March, while Gaga was snapped on set in New York City the following month, sporting a face of smeared clown makeup.

Also in April, both Gaga and Phillips confirmed that principal production had wrapped on Joker: Folie à Deux, sharing photos of her and Phoenix on set to respective Instagram pages.

One image showed Gaga staring into the camera while wearing light clown makeup, while another featured Phoenix in full makeup and costume, tilting his head to the right in a seated position.

"That's a wrap. Thanks to these two (+ the entire cast) and the BEST crew that the film industry has to offer. From top to bottom," Phillips wrote in a caption to the two photos. "Gonna crawl into a cave now (edit room) and put it all together."

Gaga kept her message to fans eagerly anticipating the Joker sequel short, simply writing, "That's a wrap ❤️‍🔥 🎬🃏 X, Harleen."
