Johnson's Real Ice Cream, the fourth-generation family business whose scoops, shakes and sundaes have been part of central Ohio summers for 74 years, plans to double its number of stores this spring.

In addition to a previously announced location opening near Grandview Heights, Johnson's announced Monday morning that it plans new locations in Italian Village and Canal Winchester as well.

"The ongoing openings mark not just an expansion for Johnson's but a celebration of the love our community has shown us," CEO Matt Wilcoxon said in a company news release.

Johnson's was founded in Bexley in 1950 and now has shops there, in New Albany and Dublin. The company's new ice cream shops will be located at 1325 Grandview Ave., on the same block as a Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams scoop shop; 869 N. 4th St., in the Italian Village location that had been a S'wich Social ice-cream shop; and 20 N. High St. in Canal Winchester, near Stradley Place Park.

The company didn't offer exact opening dates for the new shops. Johnson's also is sold in nearly two dozen central Ohio grocery stores, including most Giant Eagle supermarkets.
