Johnny Marr chats with Kyle Meredith about his album Spirit Power: The Best of Johnny Marr, telling his life story through pictures in the book Marr’s Guitars, and more.

The Smiths guitarist discusses all the times he lent his guitars to Radiohead, Oasis, and New Order, as well buying a guitar in Louisville and naming it after one of the greatest boxers of all time — Muhammad Ali. Through all of the guitar talk, Marr explains how the instruments he played throughout his career shaped his signature sound.

“If someone asks me to come and play on a record tomorrow, the answer is yes, I will bring that [Rickenbacker], because it makes me do a thing people want me to do,” he says. “And there’s nothing wrong with that. Frankly, I’m happy to have something that people want me to do.”

Marr goes on to discuss his preference for feelings over stories, what he sees as the defining traits of his past 10 years, and his love of Tom Petty and Blondie’s best-of collections.
