Johnny Marr has announced that he’ll be releasing a best-of compilation album, Spirit Power: The Best of Johnny Marr, on November 3rd via BMG. The album will feature some of Marr’s favorite recent songs, as well as two brand new tunes, including the album’s lead single, “Somewhere.” Stream it below.

Personally curated by Marr, Spirit Power will celebrate his past decade of output, focusing on highlights from the string of solo albums he released between 2013 and 2022. Joining those tracks are previously-released singles “Armatopia” and “The Priest,” as well as a 2015 cover of Depeche Mode’s “I Feel You.” For the deluxe 2xCD version of the album, fans will also get to hear a handful of previously-unheard demos and rarities. As for the two brand new songs — “The Answer” and the single “Somewhere” — they were both produced by Marr with his co-producer, James Doviak.

Arriving with a cheerful, green-screen-heavy music video, “Somewhere” captures the sense of melody and jangly, poppy goodness that Marr has spent decades honing-in on. With uplifting lyrics about dreams waiting to come true to boot, it conveys his optimism, as well as his skills at writing anthemic rock bops.

For his part, Marr explained that “Somewhere” was written while he was on tour with The Killers and Blondie during 2022. “I’ve played a lot of arenas over the years, and in terms of songwriting, there’s nowhere to hide,” he said in a statement. “For a song to work, it has to be a banger. I know it’s almost uncool to think in those terms, but I grew up in a house where my parents listened to Motown, where you couldn’t get a song released if it wasn’t full of hooks.”

Spirit Power will arrive on November 3rd in a variety of formats, including: CD, the deluxe 2xCD with additional material, a standard 2xLP, a limited-edition gold 2xLP sold via “independent record shops,” a limited-edition cobalt blue 2xLP sold through HMV, and a handful of merch bundle options. More details are available on Marr’s official store, where pre-orders are ongoing.

Meanwhile, Marr is also gearing up to release a new book next month. Entitled Marr’s Guitars, the book will look at the “symbiotic relationship” between Marr and his axes, and will feature contributions from Noel Gallagher, Bernard Butler, Ed O’Brien, and Hans Zimmer, the latter of whom wrote the foreword. The book is set to arrive on October 24th via Dey Street Books. Pre-orders are ongoing.
