John Williams, 91, Isn’t Ready to Retire: “I Like to Keep an Open Mind”

John Williams turns 92 years old next month, but the legendary composer says he isn’t ready to put down his baton just yet.

Williams himself previously hinted at retirement last year, suggesting that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny would be his final film score. However, in a new interview with The Times of London, Williams clarified his status: “I don’t care much for grand pronunciamentos, statements that are firm and finished and surrounded by closed doors. If I made one without putting it in context then I withdraw it.”

“If a film came along that I was greatly interested in, with a schedule that I could cope with, then I wouldn’t want to rule anything out,” Williams added. “Everything is possible. All is before us. Only our limitations are holding us back. Or, to put it more simply: I like to keep an open mind.”

Over the course of his seven decade career, Williams has composed music for more than 75 films, including Star Wars, Jaws, Indiana Jones, and Harry Potter. To date, he’s received five Academy Awards, and he’s on the shortlist for another nomination in 2024.

In February, Williams will team up with Yo-Yo Ma for concerts in Philadelphia and New York City. Tickets are available here.
