John Stamos was initially reluctant to write about Lori Loughlin’s involvement in the 2020 college admissions scandal in his newly-released memoir.

Stamos, 60, discussed how he approached the issue in his book, If You Would Have Told Me, in an interview with Katie Couric and revealed how his Fuller House co-star reacted when he asked if he could write about her legal battle.

“When I submitted an early draft of my book to my publisher, they kept saying, where’s Lori? So I talked to Lori about it. And she said, ‘Go ahead and say anything you want.’ And I sort of wrote it out…from my point of view, the way she went through it,” Stamos told Couric.

In May 2020, Loughlin and her husband, Mossimo Giannulli, pleaded guilty in to bribing their daughters’ ways into the University of Southern California by faking documents and pretending they were rowing recruits. Both served time in prison.

In the book, Stamos recalls reaching out to Loughlin after first hearing about the scandal through a friend. “I started Googling, but there was very little I could find. I knew she was working in Canada, so I called to check on her,” the actor writes.

“‘Oh that, yeah, I’m not sure,’ she answers so casually as if I just asked her if Nicky and Alex finished all their vegetables,” he writes, referring to their fictional twin sons on Full House. “‘I have seen some emails lately from lawyers to Moss, but I stay out of it.’ Before I can process her response, I notice an odd clicking sound on the phone line. When I asked her about it, she again adopts her laissez-faire tone, ‘Oh, they may be bugging my phone.’”

Despite the scandal, Stamos maintains that Loughlin is his close friend. He told Couric: “She’s a saint and she made a big mistake. In typical Lori fashion, when she got out of jail, I asked how it was and she goes, ‘It wasn’t so bad, I met a couple of really nice ladies. We’re in a book club now.’”

“Lori Loughlin continues to be a cherished friend to this day. We’ve weathered storms together and stood by each other’s sides, despite life’s hurdles. We’ve seen each other at our worst,” he writes in the book.

“I’ve witnessed moments where giving up could’ve been the easiest way out for Lori. She could have shifted the blame and let her family, marriage, and life crumble. But she didn’t,” he added. “No matter how hard she was hit, how desperate everyone was to cancel her and throw her in with the pile of brutal criminals, she stood fast, protecting her daughters from the mud hurled at them day after day after day.”
