John Oliver: Trump is 'out of his f---ing mind'
John Oliver didn’t mince words on Sunday’s Last Week Tonight, blasting President Donald Trump as “out of his f—ing mind.”
Oliver came to that conclusion after noting how Trump often resorts to saying people will be “happy” with his policy changes when the policy itself is not clear. For instance, back in 2015, Trump told NBC News’ Chuck Todd of the young immigrants living in America under DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), “They have to go. We will work with them, they have to go. We will do it, and we will expedite it so people can come back in … Chuck, it will work out so well, you’ll be so happy. In four years you’re going to interview me and you’re going to say, ‘What a great job you’ve done, President Trump.'”
“That is not a plan!” Oliver said on Sunday. “Saying they have to go, but then they can maybe come back in, and ending sounding like he’s trying to hypnotize Chuck Todd: ‘It will work out so well, you’ll be so happy, in four years you’re going to say, “what a great job you’ve done, President Trump,” now when I snap my fingers you’re going to wake up and wet your pants.'”
This month, after the Trump administration announced it will end DACA in six months, the president said he hoped something would happen in Congress to “legalize” DACA and added, “If we can get something to happen, we’re going to sign it, and we’re going to make it — we’re going to make a lot of happy people.”
“Okay, listen, because this is important: any time Trump says he’s going to make people happy, or that you’re going to be happy in the future, that means he has got nothing and he’s trying to end the conversation. Remember, that’s how he shut down Chuck Todd on the plane. And he doesn’t just do it with immigration, he does it with everything,” Oliver said in response.
The host then showed numerous examples of Trump using the “happy” rhetoric, about everything from changing trade policy (“Wait until you see what’s up for you — you’re going to be so happy”) to steel tariffs (“the steel folks are going to be very happy”). Trump even said Speaker of the House Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell were “happy” with how he made a deal with the Democratic leadership to raise the debt ceiling this month — when by all accounts they were not.
“Trump may be able to fool people by saying that they’ll be happy in the future, but we cannot let him trip people into thinking that they were happy in the past. And in that way, it is actually weirdly ironic that he is taking such a hard line against Dreamers [the 800,000 young immigrants in America under DACA] — because this guy is clearly out of his f—ing mind!”
