On Sunday’s season finale of Last Week Tonight, host John Oliver closed the show by reflecting on the past season, during which he eventually made the move back into a studio with a live audience. But he said that he was actually feeling a little down — despite being back in a studio, Oliver still hasn’t seen much of his staff since March 2020.

“And though I am definitely looking forward to next year, there is no question that it has been difficult spending so much of this one in isolation,” Oliver said.

And who better to come and help cheer up Oliver than George Clooney? The star appeared earlier in the season during an episode every time Oliver snapped his fingers, so the host tried it again and there was Clooney. Only this time, he gave Oliver the power to summon any celebrity with a snap of his fingers, but only for a few minutes.

While the gift had good intentions, it didn’t quite go as planned for Oliver.

The first celebrity, actress Jennifer Coolidge, confused Oliver for other talk-show hosts Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon and James Corden. The next snap, which brought up Will Ferrell, led to Ferrell telling Oliver that Clooney gives this power to random people all the time.

“Last week I got summoned by a guy who sold Clooney a pack of Trident,” Ferrell said.

Things only went downhill from there with stars like Rupaul, who mistook Oliver for a contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race; Brian Baumgartner — aka Kevin from The Office — who was upset that Oliver interrupted a Cameo video recording session; and even Cardi B, who thought she was speaking to an Alexa device.

Once Oliver got to Leslie Jones and she ended up declaring that “man won’t leave,” Clooney was snapped back into the picture to tell Oliver that his time was up, and to see how it went.

“People were pretty relentlessly mean to me, George, but honestly it was kind of great,” Oliver said.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver airs Sundays at 11 p.m. on HBO.
