John Oliver Shows Future of Journalism With Funny 'Spotlight' Spoof
On Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, John focused on the desperate situation of the country’s newspapers and how the future of journalism looks bleak. He pointed out that between 2004 and 2014, newspapers gained $2 billion in online ad revenue but lost $30 billion in print revenue. The host joked that it was like “finding a lucky penny on the sidewalk on the same day your bank account is drained by a 16-year-old Belgian hacker.”
John thought the best way to illustrate the bleak future of the newspaper industry was to make a spoof of the movie Spotlight. In the spoof, Bobby Cannavale plays a reporter who’s trying to break a story about corruption in city hall. Unfortunately, his boss, played by Jason Sudeikis, didn’t think that story would get a lot of clicks and asked for other story ideas. Rose Byrne, who played another reporter, said she was working on a story about a cat that looked like a raccoon and, of course, Sudeikis loved it.
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver airs Sunday at 11 p.m. on HBO.
