John Oliver offers to buy creepy South Texas beach dolls from Mission-Aransas Reserve

Comedian John Oliver offered to buy all of the creepy baby dolls washing up on South Texas beaches with a donation to the Mission-Aransas Reserve's turtle and marine wildlife rehabilitation program.

On July 3, the host of "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" offered to buy all of the remaining barnacle-encrusted dolls in a video about his hatred for the creepy phenomenon.

"We will reluctantly buy all of the remaining dolls that you have ... with a $10,000 donation to the turtle and marine wildlife rehabilitation program," Oliver said on his show. "We will do it and then, crucially, I promise we will figure out the best way to destroy every last one."

Oliver's HBO show is on break until later this month, but Oliver said he ran an extra segment because he hates the beach dolls so much.

"I hate those dolls," Oliver said. "I hate them so much. I am here talking to you about that in a week that we are off exclusively because I hate them."

The dolls, often covered with gooseneck barnacles and algae, wash up on South Texas beaches every month, according to the Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve.

Mission-Aransas Reserve is a federal and state partnership administered by the University of Texas that conducts research, education and stewardship programs and maintains health Texas coasts.

Jace Tunnell, director of the reserve, said he emailed the producers Tuesday morning about the offer.

"It would be great if they would donate to the ARK (Amos Rehabilitation Keep) to help the sea turtles and probably good for the show to destroy the dolls," Tunnell said in an email.
