John Oliver: ‘It Is Dangerous’ to Assume Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner Will Save You (Video)

Many moderates are counting on Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner to save the country from the president’s personal politics — but don’t hold your breath, John Oliver warned on Sunday.

Ivanka serves as an unpaid advisor to her dad, while her husband Kushner is basically tasked with every other aspect of steering our country. The enormous canyon of what we don’t actually know about the young married couple has the HBO personality quite concerned.

The “Last Week Tonight” host used his platform to answer just two questions last night: 1) “Is Ivanka really the moderating influence that people claim?” And 2) “What in Jared’s background justifies such a gigantic White House portfolio?”

He tackled those two in exactly that order.

“The assumption that many of us have that she disagrees with him isn’t actually based on much,” Oliver said of Ivanka’s politics, pointing out how purposefully vague and cagey she has been on pretty much all issues. It is the liberal media that tends to give her the benefit of the doubt on her social stances, he explained, but that isn’t really based on anything.

As for hubby Kushner, no one really knows what he has accomplished to this point in his life to warrant such a laundry list of high-level duties — other than not being Steve Bannon, that is. So, hold your horses, optimists.

“I know that all of this may seem like an evisceration of Jared and Ivanka — but it is really not,” Oliver said towards the end of his show’s main segment. “I don’t know enough about them to eviscerate them — just as you don’t know enough about them to justify putting any real hopes in them.”

“It is dangerous to think of them as a moderating influence, as reassuring as that may feel,” the “Daily Show” alum concluded. “Believe me — and it gives me no pleasure to say this — if they are the reason you’re sleeping at night, you should probably still be awake.”
