John Oliver Breaks Law, Challenges Canada to Imprison Him

On Last Week Tonight, John Oliver did something that could possibly land him in jail: He encouraged people to not vote for Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. “Don’t be deceived by his bland exterior,” Oliver told his audience. “Where there is banality, there is evil.”

According to the Canada Elections Act, it’s illegal for people who don’t reside in Canada to encourage voters not to vote for a candidate, and doing so could result in a $5,000 fine and/or six months in jail. Knowing this, Oliver said, “I’m going to tell you not to vote for Stephen Harper alongside this beaver … and this moose receiving a colonoscopy under Canada’s excellent single-payer health care system.”

To further rub it in Canada’s face, he enlisted the help of the country’s own Mike Myers. Myers, who came out dressed as a Mountie, announced, “I love Canada, but the fact that it has a law banning outsiders from telling Canadians how to vote is one of the least Canadian things possible.” Oliver and Myers then proceeded to tell people to not vote for Harper, making it rain with $5,000 Canadian.
