John Mulaney has been a rock by Olivia Munn’s side as she privately faced a major health battle.

On Wednesday, the actress, 43, revealed that she was diagnosed with breast cancer last year in a candid Instagram post, where she also gave her boyfriend a shoutout for all of his support for her and their 2-year-old son Malcolm during her treatment.

“I’m so thankful to my friends and family for loving me through this. I’m so thankful to John for the nights he spent researching what every operation and medication meant and what side effects and recovery I could expect,” she wrote of Mulaney, 41. “For being there before I went into each surgery and being there when I woke up, always placing framed photos of our little boy Malcolm so it would be the first thing I saw when I opened my eyes.”

In a comment on Munn’s post, the comedian shared a sweet message for his girlfriend as he wrote, “Thank you for fighting so hard to be here for us. Malc and I adore you. ❤️”

In Munn’s post, which featured several photos of her in hospitals in Los Angeles, she shared a long statement detailing her health battle over the past year.

After a “normal mammogram” and a negative test for “all 90 different cancer genes” last winter, Munn was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“In the past ten months I have had four surgeries, so many days spent in bed I can't even count and have learned more about cancer, cancer treatment and hormones than I ever could have imagined,” she wrote, revealing that she only discovered the cancer due to the diligence of her OBGYN, Dr. Aliabadi, who calculated her “Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Score” and “saved my life.”

After an MRI, an ultrasound and a biopsy, she was diagnosed with “Luminal B cancer in both breasts,” which she described as “an aggressive, fast moving cancer.” She had a double mastectomy 30 days later.

“I went from feeling completely fine one day, to waking up in a hospital bed after a 10-hour surgery the next,” she continued. “I'm lucky. We caught it with enough time that I had options.”

In the post, the X-Men: Apocalypse actress also spoke to some of the more emotional parts of her battle with breast cancer, including how she’s juggled being a mother while being ill.

“Surprisingly, I've only cried twice. I guess I haven't felt like there was time to cry. My focus narrowed and I tabled any emotions that I felt would interfere with my ability to stay clearheaded.”

She continued, “I've tended to let people see me when I have energy, when I can get dressed and get out of the house, when I can take my baby boy to the park. I've kept the diagnosis and the worry and the recovery and the pain medicine and the paper gowns private. I needed to catch my breath and get through some of the hardest parts before sharing.”

In the post’s caption, she wrote, “I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I hope by sharing this it will help others find comfort, inspiration and support on their own journey.”

Munn’s reveal of her harrowing year-long health journey comes just days after she and Mulaney attended the Oscars together and two months after they made their red carpet debut as a couple at the 2024 Governors Awards. They posed for multiple photos together on the carpet and held hands, with Munn looking elegant in an all-white ensemble and Mulaney looking dapper in a classic black tuxedo and bowtie.

The couple began dating in May 2021, as sources confirmed to PEOPLE they were “taking it slowly” to start. Four months later, Mulaney announced that Munn was pregnant during an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, as he credited the actress and their son-to-be for helping “save me from myself in this early journey out of recovery.”
