John Mulaney had a “very ”awkward experience watching an 'erotic' film with his girlfriend Olivia Munn's mom

John Mulaney is recalling the hilariously awkward time he watched an erotic film with his girlfriend Olivia Munn's mom.
The stand-up comedian revealed on Thursday's episode of The Late Show that he became "instant friends" with Munn's mother, whom he affectionately called "Miss Kim," after she came to stay with the couple following the birth of their son, Malcolm, in 2021. As part of their friendship, Mulaney said, he and Miss Kim watch "one to two Korean period pieces every night" — which is how they stumbled upon Park Chan-wook's acclaimed 2016 film The Handmaiden.
"I'm sitting with the wonderful Miss Kim, we are on the couch together, and we find this Korean film called The Handmaiden," Mulaney told host Stephen Colbert. "It's serious. Set in the early 20th century. It's about this book collector and this kept woman, and we're watching the film. It's right up our alley: Korea, old-fashioned, perfect. It becomes, Stephen, the most graphic, sexual, erotic — the most, like, I was truly like, 'This is what people mean by erotic.'"
Based on a 2002 novel by Sarah Waters, The Handmaiden follows Nam Sook-hee (Kim Tae-ri), who becomes a handmaiden as part of a scheme to swindle an inheritance away from Lady Izumi Hideko (Kim Min-hee). Along the way, the pair strike up a romantic and sexual relationship that is so explicit, Mulaney couldn't discuss it on CBS.
"I can't say any more about it. Very intense. They're right against each other, very serious, very physical. I look over. Me and Miss Kim are under the same blanket I realize," Mulaney said, miming casually watching the film with their blanket pulled up high. "And Olivia's mom looks over at me and goes, 'I think they a little bit lesbian. What do you think?'"

It only got more awkward for Mulaney and Miss Kim as the film continued.
"Then there is an oral sex scene that's off the charts," he recalled, leaning forward as he burst into laughter. "It's so much that you have to look at each other. So I just look over at her and she's staring at me and she goes, 'Hormone, everybody got 'em. What do you think?'"
"It's a good relationship," Colbert said through laughter.
Mulaney confirmed, "It's a good relationship."
