WORCESTER — As part of his “Live and In Person” concert tour, John Mellencamp will be performing March 11 at The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory for the Performing Arts.

Mellencamp’s latest album, “Orpheus Descending,” is praised as being one of his most personal records to date, boasting socially conscious, thought-provoking songs “Hey God” and “The Eyes of Portland.”

No stranger to the Worcester area, Mellencamp opened for Heart Oct. 11, 1982, at the Worcester Centrum, under the name John Cougar. When tickets went on sale, no one really cared. The Heart sisters, Ann and Nancy Wilson, were touring behind “Private Auditions,” a mediocre album that didn’t connect with fans and no one knew who Cougar was.

Initially, tickets sold poorly. But, by the time the concert rolled into Worcester, the arena was packed, not because of Heart but because of the up-and-coming rocker from Indiana.

By showtime, Cougar had the number one album in the country, with two number-one singles, "Jack and Diane" and "Hurt So Good."

Three years later Nov. 25, 1985, John Cougar Mellencamp was headlining the Centrum.

Through a succession of consistently soulful and soul-baring rock 'n' roll records, Mellencamp established himself as a Midwestern Bruce Springsteen, singing small, hapless tales of struggle, hardships and triumphs.

The last time Mellencamp rocked Worcester, he brought his “Plain Spoken” tour Oct.  11, 2016, to the Hanover Theatre.
