A Rough Break Up

John Mayer and Taylor Swift dated way back in 2009 while they recorded the duet "Half of My Heart," and the brief relationship ended in hurt feelings and emotional ballads.

After their break up, Swift wrote the ballad "Dear John," which was featured on her album Speak Now and featured the lyrics:

"Dear John, I see it all, now it was wrong/ Don't you think nineteen is too young/ To be played by your dark twisted games, when I loved you so?/ I should've known"

"Well maybe it's me and my blind optimism to blame/ Maybe it's you and your sick need to give love then take it away/ And you'll add my name to your long list of traitors who don't understand/ And I'll look back and regret how I ignored when they said "run as fast as you can"

Moving On

Mayer responded to the song in 2012, when he told Rolling Stone:

"I was really caught off-guard, and it really humiliated me at a time when I'd already been dressed down. I mean, how would you feel if, at the lowest you've ever been, someone kicked you even lower?

"I will say as a songwriter that I think it's kind of cheap song writing. I know she's the biggest thing in the world, and I'm not trying to sink anybody's ship, but I think it's abusing your talent to rub your hands together and go, 'wait till he gets a load of this!' That's bullsh*t."

Swift never publicly commented on the relationship, but Mayer seemed to be over it by the time her album reputation came out. Mayer called it "a fine piece of work."

His Instagram Live Show

Mayer now has a talk show on Instagram Live called Current Mood with John Mayer, and his latest guest was pop star Shawn Mendes. Mendes opened for Swift on her 1989 tour and recently recorded a remixed duet of her single and album title track "Lover."

While Mendes was on the show, the conversation drifted to the song "Lover," which Mayer was gracious enough to praise, saying:

"Love the song. I really like the song."

However, Mayer also hilariously pointed out some interesting parts of the song for comedic effect.

His Thoughts On 'Lover'

Mayer joked around, saying:

"I get a little chuckle because she says, ‘We can keep the Christmas lights up until January,’ and I go…you’re insane. Everyone keeps their Christmas lights up until January!"

He continued, even singing some joking lyrics rewritten to reflect the true nature of Christmas decorations.

"'We can keep the Christmas lights up until January. And then about January 5, we’ll take the lights down, and we’ll put ’em in a box and we’ll label that box Christmas lights, and we’ll put ’em in the attic until next December!' Boy, that’s a crazy love, I’ll tell ya!"

Is Mayer over it, or is he still a little bitter?
