John Legend Says His & Chrissy Teigen's Struggles Only 'Deepened & Strengthened' Their Marriage

It’s easy to think that celebrities have it made, but they experience ups and downs just like the rest of us — and one of Hollywood’s favorite couples is opening up about the heartbreak they’ve endured. John Legend says his and Chrissy Teigen’s struggles have only “deepened and strengthened” the bond they share. Their IVF journey, Teigen’s postpartum depression, the inevitable chaos of parenting together… People‘s new Sexiest Man Alive admits that their marriage is stronger for having endured all of those things.
In 2015, Teigen opened up about the couple’s struggles to conceive, sharing that they’d been trying for years to get pregnant. And then, when they finally did get pregnant after turning to IVF, Teigen experienced postpartum depression in the wake of daughter Luna’s birth. “[Parenthood] deepens your love for your partner because you see them in a different light going through, in our case, the trouble of actually having a kid,” Legend told People for this week’s cover issue.

Their relationship gained another dimension once their kids were born. He continued, “Then Chrissy’s going through postpartum depression. You just see different sides of that person, and if you go through it and you learn from it and you come out the other end better for it, then it deepens and strengthens your relationship.”

Of course, one of the reasons fans love Legend and Teigen together so much is because the bond they share is so obvious. In fact, according to Legend, his wife is one of the only people who really sees him for who he actually is. The prevailing misconception is that he’s “super-serious and kind of hyper-romantic all the time.” However, shares Legend, “That is not me. I let loose a lot more than people would expect.”
What people probably would expect, though, is that Teigen is the person best able to get Legend to let his guard down and be that true self. I mean, need we remind you of his recent drunken onesie serenade at Universal Studios? Through the good times and the bad, these two embody relationship goals.
