If you look up “couple goals” in the dictionary, you’d probably find a photo of John Legend and Chrissy Teigen. The couple is the picture of what a modern loving relationship looks like — but it wasn’t always that way. In fact, when John Legend and Chrissy Teigen met, it wasn’t love at first sight, and it actually took the couple a hot seconds to get on the loving level they are today. Say what?

First of all, to Legend, we have to say: How very dare you, sir. Have you seen Teigen? Have you experienced her spirit? Her humor? Have you basked in her light? How could you not fall in love with this woman from the moment you laid eyes on her?

It’s wild to imagine it wasn’t love as first sight between Legend and Teigen when met in 2006 on the music video set of his song “Stereo.” Then we remembered that Legend is a red-blooded American man, and his reasons actually make total sense. Speaking with Access Live on Monday, Legend explained, “It was at least lust at first sight for both of us and then, you know, obviously it developed in that day and that moment. We had instant chemistry that day and then we started dating not long after that and here we are, married with two kids.”

As we all know, things obviously progressed from lust at first sight. Legend told Access Live about the early years of their relationship, recalling, “I don’t know what counts as our first date because we hung out that day and night, and then hung out. That’s as the kids say,” he joked. “And then we started going on trips together not long after that because we didn’t really live in the same city. I was living mainly in New York, she was mainly living in L.A. and so we would just meet.”

Legend also shared that the couple’s relationship grew and deepened as they took lots of trips together, including to Italy, where they recently vacationed with their two kids, Luna, 3, and Miles, 1. “She would come meet me out on the road. We would go on little trips together. We went to, like, Mexico,” he said. “We went to Italy. I’d say that the time we fell in love was our first trip to Italy and so we ended up getting married there, and we go back there almost every year. … Italy is, like, our love spot.”

We’re glad to see that things have progressed to the point they’re at now with Legend and Teigen (a loving marriage, two precious kids, thriving careers and so forth) because we cannot imagine — nor do we want to! — what life would be like if things had stayed just lusty between them more than a decade ago.
