"I know she's fearless, and you can't get a cheap laugh out of her," John David Washington says of Madeleine Yuna Voyles

John David Washington was blown away by his young The Creator costar.

On Friday, Disney Home Entertainment shared a behind-the-scenes clip from 39-year-old Washington's latest movie exclusively with PEOPLE, showing the actor and filmmaker Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) praising Madeleine Yuna Voyles, the child actor whose character the film revolves around.

The Creator, which largely takes place during a dystopian future in the year 2070, follows Washington's former military officer Joshua Taylor as he is recruited to help end a long war between the most of the Western nations and the so-called New Asia (consisting of East Asia, South Asia and Southeast Asia), who are in support of a global artificial intelligence.

During this mission, Joshua meets a new artificial intelligence-human hybrid "simulant" modeled after a child, whom he comes to name Alphie (played by Voyles, who made her onscreen debut in the science fiction film at just 7 years old.)

"She's a special human being... she's extremely talented, present and well beyond her years," Washington says of Voyles in the clip. "I think she's been here before, you know, that spirit of hers."

The Creator centers on Joshua and Alphie's relationship as he seeks to better understand the source of the conflict. Alphie, meanwhile, has powers many other "simulants" seen throughout the movie do not, making her key to ending the war on either side.

"I didn't know how it was going to work out, chemistry-wise, to be honest," Washington says in the clip of working with a child actor so closely. "But I know she's fearless, and you can't get a cheap laugh out of her."

"I look back now and I'm just like, 'Can you imagine if we didn't have Madeleine? Can you imagine this movie without her?' " Edwards adds in the clip.

The Creator arrives on digital Tuesday, Nov. 14. The film will be available for purchase on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-Ray and DVD Tuesday, Dec. 12.
