John Cena's a misunderstood bull in new 'Ferdinand' trailer

Never judge a bull by its cover — especially if he’s the title character in the upcoming Ferdinand.

As you can see in the trailer above, the physically intimidating bull is actually a gentle, flower-smelling soul who’s got an even bigger heart. Unfortunately, one small bee-sting-related accident sees him go on a rampage through the town marketplace, which then causes him to be taken from his home — and separated from the young girl who helped raise him — as he’s sent to take part in bullfights in another part of Spain. But, as the new clip shows, Ferdinand will do whatever it takes to get home.

The movie is based on the best-selling children’s book The Story of Ferdinand by Munroe Leaf and Robert Lawson, which tells the story of a bull who would rather smell flowers than take part in bullfights, refusing to take heed of the matadors or anyone else.

John Cena stars as Ferdinand in the animated Blue Sky production, where he’s joined by a voice cast that includes a host of familiar names including SNL‘s Kate McKinnon, Jane the Virgin‘s Gina Rodriguez, Hamilton‘s Daveed Diggs, Master of None‘s Bobby Cannavale, Ducktale‘s David Tennant, Black-ish‘s Anthony Anderson, The Carmichael Show‘s Jerrod Carmichael, Veep‘s Sally Phillips, Law & Order SVU‘s Raul Esparza, and Sense8‘s Miguel Ángel Silvestre.

Ferdinand hits theaters Dec. 15. See the poster below.
