2023 marks 69 years of Godzilla

Godzilla Day 2023 commemorates 69 years of the legendary Japanese kaiju Godzilla — who first appeared in 1954’s Gojira. Fittingly, this celebration takes place as the King of the Monsters has not one, but two massive films coming out.

Writer-director Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus One premiered in Shinjuku earlier this month. The film will be screened at the Tokyo International Film Festival on November 1 ahead of its wide release in Japan on Godzilla Day, November 3.

Then, Godzilla turns 70 in style with the release of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which is due to hit theaters worldwide on April 12, 2024. Directed by Adam Wingard, the upcoming crossover film takes place in Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. Pictures’ ever-expanding MonsterVerse.
