John Boyega has been revealed as the leading actor in the upcoming The Book Of Eli series. As reported by Deadline, the 31-year-old is also an executive producer on the prequel. Boyega will play the younger version of Denzel Washington’s Eli from the 2010 film. The movie’s original writer Gary Whitta is set to write and original directors Albert and Allen Hughes are also set to executive produce.

According to the outlet, the fictional series takes place 30 years before the events in the film, which would put Boyega on-screen around the time of the nuclear event or directly in its immediate aftermath.

Currently, The Book of Eli prequel series is still in development, and additional details, including a release date, are not available.

In the postapocalyptic thriller, which also starred Gary Oldman and Mila Kunis, Washington leads as “a warrior not by choice but necessity,” according to the official Warner Bros. description.

“I think that we all at some point are in search of something – a higher power, whatever you want to call it, the meaning of life. I know I was, especially at even my son’s age in my 20s, and dabbling in Eastern philosophies and yoga and Buddhism and Christianity and Islam,” explained the acclaimed actor ahead of the film’s release.

“I kind of touched them all, you know, just trying to figure out the meaning of life or if nothing else, figure myself out. So I think there’s that – there is a thirst for that but, you know, as a classic battle between God and the Devil or even more specifically for the character of Eli, I mean, he’s five days’ walk from the promised land, if you will, for taking this book where it belongs, and literally all hell breaks loose.”
