Joey Fatone Recalls Being 'Out of a Job' After *NSYNC Split and Trying Broadway: 'I May Suck, But Let's Find Out'

Fatone reflected on his career after *NSYNC broke up in 2002 during a new interview with tourmate AJ McLean of the Backstreet Boys

When *NSYNC initially split up in 2002, Joey Fatone was ready to try new things.

In a new interview for Rolling Stone alongside tourmate AJ McLean of the Backstreet Boys, Fatone opened up about taking his career in new directions following the "Bye Bye Bye" group's disbandment.

"Well, thank God [the breakup] didn’t force me to [reinvent myself]. I wanted to. It wasn’t like, 'Oh damn, I’m out of a job. What have I got to do?'" explained Fatone, 47. "It was more or less, 'Holy s---, these doors are opened. Let’s see if I can walk in. I may suck, but let’s find out.'"

*NSYNC announced an indefinite hiatus after the group's Celebrity Tour ended in spring 2002. Each of the band members ventured into various types of solo stardom, with Fatone branching out into acting with a role in the film My Big Fat Greek Wedding followed by his Broadway debut in Rent.

"I always wanted to do Broadway. Right after *NSYNC, I did Rent on Broadway. I did Little Shop of Horrors on Broadway. And then when I did Dancing With the Stars, people saw my personality," he said, referencing his run on the ABC dancing competition series in 2007.

Fatone continued, "People were like, 'Oh, he’s not just a guy from *NSYNC. He’s actually a person that actually acts.' It was interesting the path that I had to go through, but it was amazing."

Last year, *NSYNC reunited and released a new single for the movie Trolls Band Together called "Better Place." Ever since then, fans have been calling for more from the quintet — and Fatone is open to it.

"Anything’s possible. Let’s be honest. I never thought that *NSYNC would get back together and even do a new song," he said. "Maybe to do a performance, but never a new song and have something on a Trolls album. It’s pretty crazy. It’s like when someone said, 'Oh yeah, you’re on the charts.' I’m like, 'Oh yeah, I guess I am.' It’s been a while."

For now, however, Fatone's getting ready to embark on the A Legendary Night Tour next month with McLean, 47 — and fans should get ready to dance to both boy band's hits at the shows.

"There’s one or two songs that they have a staple dance move that the fans kind of want to see, whether it’s 'Bye Bye Bye' or it’s 'Backstreet’s Back,'" said McLean in the interview. "So Joe and I will teach each other the moves, and we’ll throw it in there just for one chorus and the crowd goes nuts."
