Joel McHale says he dislocated Chevy Chase's shoulder during an altercation on “Community” set

"It was an advanced horseplay," he said.

Joel McHale is taking a not-so-fond trip down memory lane.

The Animal Control star was a guest on a recent episode of Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast, where he opened up about an incident on the set of Community that ended with him dislocating costar Chevy Chase's shoulder.

The anecdote was brought up on the podcast after McHale pointed out that he's been very vocal about altercations that reportedly happened on set with Chase, even including a chapter in his 2016 memoir Thanks for the Money that serves as a “step by step on how to fight Chevy Chase.”

When asked if the incidents were physical or verbal, McHale said they did get physical, and there were “multiple times” where a physical altercation involved shoving or pushing. “It was an advanced horseplay,” he added, joking, “You know, horseplay, and then it always turned into sex. It wasn’t fun.”

He continued, “It would get a little contentious. It would get to this point where I'm like, 'Okay...' I got in trouble one time because I injured him. I dislocated his shoulder.”

As for the chapter in his book, McHale says Chase never reached out to him about it. "Does he know he's an a--hole?" Rosenbaum asked, to which McHale said that he "would think so," before going off about comments Chase — who has not been shy about his discontent with making Community — made during an appearance last year on Marc Maron's WTF podcast. In it, Chase admitted that he didn't think Community was "funny enough" for him and that he felt "constrained" by the sitcom.

“My response to that was, well, yeah the feeling is mutual about your attitude, and you didn’t have to be there," McHale said. "He’s like, ‘I didn’t want to be around the table with those people.’ And like Gillian [Jacobs, fellow Community costar] would say, ‘[The] feeling’s mutual.’ This was not a prison sentence. We were not conscripted into a war. You were being paid a lot of money and getting free food all day long, so you could just walk away."

A representative for Chase did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Community ran for six seasons, from 2009 to 2014, four of which Chase starred in. He had only a guest role in the fifth season and didn't appear in the final season at all. He reportedly had a rocky relationship not only with his costars but also with series creator Dan Harmon, and left the show "by mutual agreement" after reportedly using a slur on set during production on season 4.
