Joel Kim Booster knows the cat's out of the bag when it comes to his work. "You get a certain amount of gay with everything I do," the 34-year-old stand-up comic tells EW. And while his new show, the Apple TV+ sitcom Loot, isn't "a uniquely gay project," he says in his signature acerbic manner that he's "really excited for the little bits of f----try" series co-creator Alan Yang (Master of None) allowed him to "sneak into the show."

After the premiere of the film Fire Island, Booster's gay spin on Pride & Prejudice he wrote and starred in for Hulu, the comedian previews Loot, which he shot with Saturday Night Live alum Maya Rudolph and Pose Golden Globe winner Michaela Jaé Rodriguez.

Booster plays Nicholas, the devoted assistant to Rudolph's billionaire Molly Novak, in the workplace comedy. When her husband of 20 years betrays her, sparking a complete public spiral, Molly makes a comeback by focusing on her charity foundation run by Sofia Salinas (Rodriguez).

Matt Hubbard (30 Rock), the other co-creator of Loot, used to work with Booster on the short-lived NBC show Sunnyside. The actor says they wrote the part of Nicholas with him in mind. "It wasn't necessarily based on me or anything like that, but it was one of those things where he's a gay Asian guy from the Midwest who's a little rude and sarcastic," Booster explains. "If I can't get this role, then we've got real problem, we have some issues that we need to address."

Booster has spent years writing his own material, including for his Netflix stand-up special, premiering June 21. But Loot felt like a reprieve, offering a chance to play in someone else's sandbox.

Working with Rudolph, he says, was a dream. "She is everything you want her to be and more," he adds. "The thing that you don't maybe expect necessarily from someone who's that big of a star and has been for so long is how down-to-earth she is. She's still driving her kids to dance class and baseball. It's so weird to observe her being so normal, showing you pictures of her kids and doing family s---. She is such a great presence and leader on that show. She really is the glue that holds us all together."

Loot premieres on Apple TV+ this June 24. Between Fire Island, his stand-up special, and now this show, Booster remarks of his jam-packed month, "If you see me up on one of those floats on Pride in New York, it will be a goddamn miracle."
