Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon's sister and his sister's boyfriend have been indicted in connection with a shooting March 6 in Anderson Township in Ohio.

Lamonte Brewer is charged with felonious assault, tampering with evidence and having weapons under disability. Shalonda Mixon is charged with tampering with evidence and obstructing justice.

Prosecutor Melissa Powers said Joe Mixon had a weapon at the time of the shooting, but did not fire and did not commit a crime.

In a statement provided to NFL Network, Joe Mixon's agent, Peter Schaffer, said Mixon returned from California on the day of the shooting. Joe Mixon and his physical therapist saw people running through the neighborhood with what appeared to be firearms. Schaffer reiterated that his client did not commit a crime.

NFL FREE AGENCY: Winners, losers and too close to call

"Joe hates that a young adult was injured during this incident. He has been involved in youth activities in various capacities since joining the Bengals and calling Cincinnati home. His goal has always been to help our youth, not harm them," the statement reads.

Powers said multiple juveniles were playing dart wars and that Brewer and others should have been able to tell that the juveniles were carrying toy weapons.

Many area students organize dart wars, in which pairs of teams face off against each other, usually in a bracket-style elimination. They shoot at each other with the popular foam dart guns to earn points. The entry fees are usually shared between the winners or top teams.

The prosecutor said Brewer used a Zastava pistol, which resembles an AK-47 and fires the same round.

Powers said Brewer and Shalonda Mixon have not been arrested and their whereabouts are unknown. She said Brewer has a "lengthy" criminal record including drug and weapons offenses as well as "offenses of violence."

Joe Mixon had been receiving death threats and was concerned when he heard people were running around with weapons, Powers said. She said Joe Mixon was in the yard with Brewer, but that Brewer acted independently.
