Producer Lisa Saltzman has acquired the rights to an upcoming biography about Joe Cocker, and has confirmed that a biopic about the beloved British blues-rock singer’s life is currently in development.

Titled Joe Cocker: With a LOT of Help from His Friends, the book is by the rock’n’roll biographer, Mark Bego, and will be the first crack at telling Cocker’s story since his death in 2014, following his rise in the late ‘60s, his internal struggles, and the peace he ultimately found. The book will hit shelves later this month on November 16th, and is available to pre-order now.

Cocker is perhaps best remembered for his 1968 rendition of The Beatles’ “With a Little Help from My Friends,” which became a No. 1 hit on the UK Singles Chart when it debuted. The following year, his version of the song was cemented into the zeitgeist of the ‘60s thanks to his performance of it at Woodstock in 1969. Later, it became the theme song for the television show, The Wonder Years.

Beyond “With a Little Help from My Friends,” though, Cocker had a colorful career. His 1974 cut of “You Are So Beautiful” also became a hit, and a signature tune at live shows. In 1982, he and Jennifer Warnes landed a No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 thanks to their duet, “Up Where We Belong.” In December 2014, Cocker died from lung cancer at the age of 70.

“Joe Cocker’s story is one of ambition, talent, attainment, debilitating self-esteem, self-destruction, redemption, and finally joy, set in the most exciting and colorful era of popular music,” Saltzman said in a statement. “Joe was a unique talent. As a singer Cocker’s gritty bluesy rock voice and distinctive performances rendered him a true original. He lived a bigger-than-life existence, and the film Joe Cocker: With A Little Help From My Friends will show the high points, the low points, the frustrations, crippling battles with his demons, and finally the exhilaration of a life successfully lived.”

Beyond Joe Cocker: With a LOT of Help from His Friends, Saltzman also owns the rights to several other titles, including biographies of fitness icon Jack LaLane, “Rhinestone Cowboy” singer Glen Campbell, former First Lady of the Philippines Imelda Marcos, The Bee Gees’ brother Andy Gibb, and Mary Harris Jones, aka Mother Jones.
