Edwin: RE: The Road to 270 No, she did not win the popular vote. Let's break it down. Aren't we the UNITED STATES of America? Aren't we a Democratic Republic? In simple terms, what is a Democracy? The person who gets the most votes, wins. Winner take all. No "splitses". Of what is the United States comprised? A collection of independently governed States that have formed a UNION that has a "national" government to coordinate the business of the nation as a whole, protect our borders, and maintain a national defense. That doesn't mean that States Rights are ignored. In fact, States Rights are what caused the Founders to write the Constitution and, also, is what was the main reason for the War of Northern Aggression - I mean the US Civil War. Slavery might have brought it to a head, but States Rights was the real reason that the Southern States wanted to secede. Quick. Who was the first President of the United States? Wrong. John Hanson - but, he was elected under the Articles of Confederation. The "scholars" want you to believe that his Presidency doesn't count. Washington was the NINTH president to be elected - but he was elected after the signing of the Constitution. In fact, Washington voted for Hanson to be the first President. Back to the popular vote. Who elects the POTUS? THE STATES - by a "democratic" vote. All the votes that a State has for POTUS are given to the winner of the STATE'S Presidential election. Winner take all. The democratic way. No "splitses". The State's number of electoral votes is proportional to the population of the state to the total population of the nation - LEGAL voters only. So, the POPULAR vote of each State determines the ONE Person, running for POTUS, that the State's votes go to. There is no such thing as a "national popular vote" for POTUS. If you insist there is, what does the "winner" get? I'll tell you. They get to honor the DULY ELECTED person who got the most votes from the STATES. You can spin it anyway you want, but the end result is that we are a collection of States, and the States elect the POTUS - the Democratic way. The person who carries the State gets all of that State's votes. Once more. EVERY STATE has a say in who is elected POTUS - not just the 3 or 4 most populated States. In today's climate, I have to make sure that "votes" are from LEGAL CITIZENS OF THE UNTIED STATES OF AMERICA - that are still alive - and only one vote per LEGAL CITIZEN OF THE UNTIED STATES OF AMERICA.
