Jodie Foster is back in awards contention yet again with her latest movie “Nyad,” which was released in theaters October 20 and will soon debut on Netflix on November 3. The sports biopic is directed by Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi in their first narrative feature, as they’re known for their documentaries like “The Rescue” and Oscar winner “Free Solo.” It stars Annette Bening as the titular long-distance marathon swimmer Diana Nyad – the film being based on her autobiography “Find A Way” – and her attempts to swim from Cuba to Florida, succeeding at the age of 64 in 2013. Foster plays her coach Bonnie Stoll and has been getting complimentary reviews in the role with Peter Debruge of Variety calling her a “buoyant presence” and Benjamin Lee of The Guardian stating that she “steals the film with a fine reminder of her easy charisma.” Will “Nyad” potentially score Foster a Golden Globe win for Best Supporting Actress in a wide open category?

Foster is a Golden Globe darling when it comes to the award show, having 10 nominations to her name and three wins, going all the way back to 1977 when she received her first mention for “Freaky Friday.” She then went on to secure acting notices for “Nell,” “Contact,” “The Brave One” and “Carnage,” while also being recognized for producing “Nell” and “The Baby Dance.”

Her victories span all the way back to more than three decades ago from when she won for her leading roles in “The Accused” (1989) and “The Silence of the Lambs” (1992) – both of which later resulted in Oscar wins – to just three years ago in 2021 when she won in a shocking supporting upset for “The Mauritanian.” Combined with her honorary Cecil B. DeMille Award tribute in 2013, for which Foster became the fourth youngest recipient of that honor, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has a large amount of respect for her.

Similar to last year, the Best Supporting Actress Globe race has unlimited possibilities and a huge question mark as to who may come out on top, with original frontrunner Lily Gladstone now contending for lead for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” With the new rule change at the Golden Globes that allows for six nominees in every category, there are more chances of surprises. As it stands, Foster is tied in third place with Danielle Brooks (“The Color Purple”) at 11/2 odds, behind leading contenders Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”) with 37/10 and Emily Blunt (“Oppenheimer”) with 9/2. They are all followed by Julianne Moore (“May December”) in fifth place with 19/2 and Taraji P. Henson (“The Color Purple”) in sixth place with 12/1 odds.

There is no definitive frontrunner in this race as any of those contenders are not sure bets for nominations or wins due to a variety of obstacles such as limited screen time, newcomer status, lack of buzz the film, or just that the movie still has yet to be released. This was also the case when Foster was nominated in 2021, with such uncertainty allowing her to pull off a win as there was no clear choice between the nominees, and she could very well do it again as her role in “Nyad” guides the film, particularly in the final act, and her character has many layers that carries Diana Nyad throughout her quest and supports Bening, making Foster almost a co-lead.

Even though “Nyad” may not look like it has the support compared to “The Holdovers” or “Oppenheimer,” with the open field in Best Supporting Actress and Foster’s history with the Golden Globes, it would not be surprising if she was able to find herself on that list of nominees come December 11 and potentially squeeze out a triumph that would propel her the rest of awards season.
