Joaquin Phoenix Flips After Being Tricked Into Going To Press Conference Following Golden Globes

Joaquin Phoenix, the star of the film, Joker, walked away with the Golden Globe award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture. Most would say that such an achievement would put you in a good mood. Beginning with his acceptance speech, that couldn't be farther from the truth.

Phoenix gave an odd speech with his comments bouncing all over the place and at times, seeming incoherent. Some are attributing his sporadic and erratic commentary to anxiety that he has dealt with in the past, but for whatever reason, he didn't appear completely composed.

Regardless, after the ceremony had concluded, Phoenix was brought into a room for the media to ask questions. The actor was irate, claiming that he had been tricked, believing the session to only be a photoshoot. He did answer some questions, but they were a far cry from pleasant.

Tricked Into Going to a Press Conference

As soon as the 45-year-old actor walked into the room, he was asked about the process he underwent in preparing for the role in Joker. Phoenix instantly snapped back at the media member.

"Isn’t this old news?" he proclaimed. "I think I’ve talked about this for six months. I mean, right? I feel like I answered these questions. You want to hear a different version of it? I can try to change it slightly, or what should I do? … It was a long process, and there’s so many things that I just can’t remember right now. But I feel like I already answered this question six months ago, but thanks for still asking."

Unfortunately for the actor, it wouldn't be a one question press conference.

The Possibility of a Sequel to Joker?

Still, some media members had the courage to continue asking questions, knowing that the responses wouldn't be pretty. The next person asked if he had any thoughts on the possibility of a sequel to the Joker film.

"What do you mean? [about the possibility of a sequel] Why?" Phoenix quipped back. "I don’t care who is saying that. That’s awesome and I love whoever says it. I don’t think that I’ve ever done too many predictable things. So if that came up, it’s not because we’re following some rule book, it’s because we feel inspired again to explore the character more thoroughly. That would be the only reason for me to do it. So that’s all I can say about that."

For Phoenix, these first two questions were ones he's already addressed, thus his frustration. But, when the media asked about the vegan-based menu provided for those in attendance at the Globes, he lightened up a bit.

Phoenix Goes Off on a Tangent About Vegan-Based Food

The third question that was asked concerned his thoughts on the HFPA deciding to go with the vegan option for the meals provided.

"It’s the first time I’ve ever eaten the food at this ceremony. I thought it was excellent. I was so moved by their decision to make tonight plant-based. It was such an important step. The SAG Awards and Critics Choice Awards and Governor’s Ball, whatever else there is, need to do it as well," he replied.

From that point on, it was all about plant and vegan-based food options. "I think we’re coming to a point now where the evidence is irrefutable and undeniable. I think it’s somewhat where we realized how poisonous tobacco was, and secondhand smoking. They made it illegal to smoke in public places," he stated.

Phoenix continued, "I think now consuming animal products is no longer just a personal choice. It is having a drastic and vast consequence on the rest of the world and all of us, and so I think it was incredibly brave and compassionate of HFPA to make that bold decision. I really commend them for that. I’ve never been so proud to attend an awards ceremony as I am tonight, and thank you so much for asking that question."

The Highly Unpredictable Joaquin Phoenix

Joaquin Phoenix has hardly ever been predictable. Even in his acting career, he hasn't stuck to the same genre or style of acting consistently. Furthermore, his role in Joker was one of the first bigger roles that he's taken on in quite some time. Prior to the blockbuster, he had focused on indie films.

With it being likely that Joker will be up for big-time awards at the Oscars next month, Phoenix's antics are something to keep an eye out for, as they're sure to produce more to talk about.
