We all have special traditions when it comes to getting in the holiday spirit — whether it’s decorating cookies, participating in a fun gift exchange, or re-watching Home Alone for the millionth time. And the best part is? So do our favorite celebrities. Over the years, stars like Joanna Gaines, Mila Kunis, and Chrissy Teigen have opened up about their Christmas traditions, so read on to see how these stars plan to get festive.

Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani

The country singer dished on how his girlfriend, Gwen Stefani, will make a “wrapping paper wall” for her kids — Kingston, 13, Zuma, 11, and Apollo, 5 — to run through after opening gifts. “At our house, it’s literally chaos. They have that moment when they run through the wrapping paper wall that she sets up every year,” he told E! News.

The mother-of-three also chimed in about a special tradition she shares with her boyfriend, Blake, which involves some extra time in the kitchen. “Me and Blake will have, like, a tradition of always trying something new that we’ve never — like, just look on the internet and find, like, a recipe, ‘That looks delicious. Let’s try that!’ You know?”

John Legend and Chrissy Teigen

“In my family, we open presents on Christmas Eve night,” the model told Today last year. In fact, so much happens on the night before, that they consider Christmas a “lazy day” where they don’t even cook! “Christmas Day is more of like order McDonald’s and go to the movies.”

The Fixer Upper star blogged about a special tradition she shares with her family that will last a lifetime. “Every holiday season, I get Chip and the kids an ornament that goes along with a memory from that year,” she said. “I write their name and the date on the bottom, so as they get older, each one of them has a little collection that’s all their own.”

Kristin Cavallari

The Very Cavallari star uses Christmas time as an opportunity to keep her three kids — Camden, 7, Jaxon, 5, and Saylor, 3 — in line! “Growing up, the elves would come every day before Christmas, and if you were good, they’d leave a little something in your stocking, and if you were bad, you got coal,” she told Us Weekly.

Kate Hudson

“Every year, Santa comes and leaves presents for the kids out in the open,” the actress — who has three children, Ryder Russell, 15, Bingham Hawn, 8, and Rani Rose, 1 — previously shared on her blog. “Sometimes Santa likes to wrap a couple of them but usually he leaves them open so the kids can see what they are. The first thing we all do is look in our stockings and look at what Santa’s been noticing about our year. Santa is very clever, he’s very funny so he likes to give the adults very funny presents!”

Michelle Obama

And…action! The former first lady opened up to Ladies’ Home Journal about her family’s traditions — and it involves an impromptu talent show! “Our extended family was so large, people couldn’t really afford to buy gifts for everyone. So a couple of my aunts would go out and purchase small gifts,” she said. “They would put them in a basket and in order to get a gift you had to perform. You could tell a joke, read a poem, do a backflip — anything counted. It’s a tradition that we’ve carried on today.”

Carrie Underwood

The country singer — who shares sons Jacob and Isaiah with husband Mike Fisher — spends Christmas morning out to breakfast! “We’ll get up and go to Waffle House,” she told People. “It’s such a hectic time, and I don’t feel like making breakfast on a day that you’re just making so much food anyway. So we order breakfast and leave a ginormous tip.”

Kim Kardashian

“My Mom’s annual Christmas Eve party is probably everyone’s favorite night of the year,” the reality star shared. “It’s all our closest family and friends celebrating the holidays with a night of food, fun, and dancing. Everyone gets glammed up and we have the best time. My mom is the ultimate host, and no one comes close to her decorating skills.”

Last year, even John Legend performed at the over-the-top Kardashian bash.

Tis the season for giving back! The mother-of-two told Entertainment Tonight back in 2017 that she doesn’t like giving her two kids — Wyatt and Dimitri — Christmas gifts. Instead, she and husband Ashton opt to donate to an organization in need.

“We’ve told our parents, ‘We’re begging you — if you have to give [the kids] something, pick one gift.’ Otherwise, we’d like to take a charitable donation, to the Children’s hospital or a pet, whatever you want. That’s our new tradition.”

A family that eats together, stays together — and Nick Jonas’ family does just that! “Every year we eat tamales on Christmas morning and it’s pretty awesome. My mom started it and it’s special because Kevin, Joe and I have grown up doing it. It’s very like us to have tamales on Christmas,” he told InStyle.

Melissa Joan Hart

In Melissa’s family, Christmas movies are always playing! “We have to start watching Elf and Christmas Vacation and all of the Christmas movies,” the actress told People. “There’s always such a long list. So that first movie comes on and then it’s like, ‘Alright it’s go time.'”

She also recently shared on Instagram that decorating the tree and getting new ornaments is a fun tradition she enjoys. “Every year we look forward to decorating our Christmas tree,” she said.
