  • Joanna Gaines shared a photo of her natural, unstyled hair to Instagram.

  • “It takes 1.5 hours to tame this mane,” she wrote.

  • Since her rise to fame, the interior designer and lifestyle mogul has learned to prioritize authenticity.

When you spend most of your time filming a TV show, you have to be camera ready—and after years in the spotlight, that’s certainly something Joanna Gaines has gotten used to.

That said, the interior designer and Fixer Upper host doesn’t talk much about beauty or skincare routine on Instagram. She usually sticks to sharing what’s new with Magnolia—her and her husband Chip’s wildly successful lifestyle brand—and family updates. However, on May 6, she gave her followers a behind-the-scenes, pre-glammed peek of herself.

In the photo shared to Joanna’s Story, the 43-year-old stood proudly with her hands on her hips while her long hair nearly overtook her face with voluminous frizz and flyaways. “It takes about 1.5 hours to tame this mane,” she wrote. “And since it’s a reveal day, I’m going to fix ‘er up.” Pun intended, of course.

In their rise to fame as America’s favorite house flippers, both Chip and Joanna have learned the importance of authenticity—especially online—which is likely why Joanna shared that snap. When she started gaining Instagram followers in response to their show back in 2013, it totally changed her approach to posting.

“I could feel insecurity start to creep in, and posting a photo was no longer an act of enjoying the in-the-moments of life but rather a more calculated decision,” she wrote in a 2019 column for The Magnolia Journal, per Today. “With every picture I found myself critiquing if there were messy backgrounds or blurry smiles. I think this is how we can end up losing sight of what it worthy of sharing and what is even more worthy than that—moments worth simply experiencing.”

She continued: “Eventually, I realized that I was letting this small square on my phone become yet another thing to perfect.”

Since then, she and Chip have made big moves to remain present in their lives—going as far as getting rid of their TV. Yep, you read that right.

The change happened upon recommendation from their marriage counselor. “We thought it would be romantic,” Chip told Oprah Winfrey in the couple’s recent Super Soul interview. “And at the end of that one year, we said, what about another year? After that second year, we’ve never looked back.”
