  • Jo Koy had only a few weeks to prepare for his Golden Globes hosting gig.

  • The "Barbie" and Taylor Swift jokes are being called tasteless by fans.

  • "Some I wrote, some other people wrote," he said in an attempt to defend the bad jokes.

Jo Koy was announced as the host for the 81st Golden Globe Awards just a few weeks ago, and his lack of time to prepare for the gig showed on Sunday.

He should perhaps be concerned that he may have made an enemy out of Swifties worldwide with his awkward Taylor Swift joke.

"As you know, we came on after a football doubleheader. The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? At the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift," Koy said, as seen in a clip uploaded by Variety on X.

The camera then panned to show the singer — in attendance — sipping on her drink, a flat expression on her face.

In his monologue, the Filipino American comedian also dropped a cringeworthy joke that the "Barbie" movie was based "on a plastic doll with big boobies."

"The key moment in Barbie is when she goes from perfect beauty to bad breath, cellulite, and flat feet — or what casting directors call 'character actor,'" Koy continued.

When the joke fell flat, Koy tried to defend himself by blaming the show's writers.

"Some I wrote, some other people wrote," he said, as seen on the Golden Globes YouTube channel. "Yo, I got the gig 10 days ago! You want a perfect monologue? Yo, shut up! You're kidding me, right? Slow down. I wrote some of these, and they're the ones you're laughing at," he added.

And it's not just the attendees who seemed unimpressed: A quick search using the term "jo koy barbie joke" on X throws up countless posts criticizing the comedian, saying the joke was tasteless and sexist.

Last week, Koy told Vanity Fair he was "feeling overwhelmed, nervous, excited, pressure" about hosting the Golden Globes with little preparation time.

"I've never written this many jokes before in my life," Koy told Vanity Fair. "This is all new, doing a host-style monologue, yet still giving it my tone and my voice. It's been challenging, but man, we're having a blast. And we're knocking this monologue out."

The Golden Globes announced on December 21 that Koy would be the host of the 2024 awards show.

Koy — born Joseph Glenn Herbert — is a stand-up comedian who's been active since 1994, a CBS News report says. Some of his comedy specials, including "Jo Koy: Live from Seattle" and "Jo Koy: Comin' in Hot," are available on Netflix.

Koy did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside regular business hours.
