Jo Koy Says He Would 'Love' to Host Golden Globes Again After Receiving Mixed Reviews (Exclusive)

The comedian tells PEOPLE he'd like more time to prepare in the future

Jo Koy is ready for round two.

Even though the comedian, 52, received mixed reviews and delivered some jokes that fell flat when he hosted the 81st Golden Globes on Sunday, he tells PEOPLE he’d “love to” host the awards show again — provided he has more time to prepare.

“With five months, not nine days,” says Koy, who told viewers during his opening monologue that he was hired for the gig “ten days ago.” (CBS announced he would be hosting in a Dec. 21 press release.)

Koy’s claim came after a few of his jokes elicited frosty responses from the celebrities inside the ballroom at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

He poked fun at the three-hour running time of Oppenheimer, saying it “needed another hour” and made a quip about Barbie being “based on a plastic doll with big boobies.”

“Some [jokes] I wrote, some other people wrote,” Koy said from the stage. “Yo, I got the gig ten days ago! You want a perfect monologue? Shut up! You’re kidding me, right? I wrote some of these, and they’re the ones you’re laughing at.”

Koy says the crowd was “great” overall, telling PEOPLE, “We're back. Hollywood was closed. It's back open again. Let's just celebrate. They're eating, drinking, having a good time. 150 countries were watching. They saw how much fun we had.”

He says the highlight of his night was “just walking out there [on stage] for the first time. I was like, let's just do this. Let's just have fun.”

His favorite celebrity interaction was with Hollywood legend Meryl Streep, whom Koy called out from the stage during his monologue.

“This woman, there's nothing she can't do," he said during his monologue of the Oscar winner. "You know my favorite line from you? Legendary. This one I hold to my heart. I see it all over the... like, every time. The way you said it just stuck with me. The way you said, 'Wakanda forever,’” he joked, implying Streep starred in the Black Panther movies.

That moment “was everything to me,” says Koy, “and she was laughing the whole time.”

Now that the show is behind him, Koy says he’s looking forward to relaxing: “I get to rest. That's the most important. I want to sleep, man. I'm so tired.”
