J.K. Simmons Gives America Stern Fatherly Praises

On The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Academy Award winner J.K. Simmons gave viewers the acknowledgment they have been desperately seeking in a segment titled “Stern Father Finally Praises You.” The superserious actor locked eyes with the camera and gave his best deadpan performance when he muttered, “Hey kiddo, that thing you do that I don’t really understand or pay any attention to — I hear you’re good at it. That’s great.”

And anyone watching the segment who has wanted their distant father to finally extend them the approval they desperately need probably felt what everyone in the audience did — sudden peace.

Simmons is known for playing cuddly characters in such films as “Juno,” “Spider-Man,” and “The Closer.” But once he inhabited the detached father role, it was comedy when he delivered the line: “I drove past the garbage cans this morning … they were in a very straight line. Didn’t know you had it in you.”

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on CBS.
