J.J. Abrams Take Us Behind the Scenes of ‘Star Wars’

60 Minutes profiled J.J. Abrams, the director of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, in a segment that opened with legendary composer John Williams conducting an orchestra for the score of the new film — and J.J. excitedly recording it with his iPhone. Throughout the segment, J.J. vacillated between wearing his director hat and his superfan hat.

He revealed that he was hesitant at first to direct the next episode of a film franchise he loved so dearly. However, Steven Spielberg made a personal plea to him, and J.J. was obliged to reconsider.

J.J. described how he came up with the idea for a new droid, BB-8. He quickly sketched a circular droid and handed the image to the “Creature Department.” Soon a puppeteer gave the character life before his eyes.

While he didn’t reveal any details about the plot, J.J. did say “The forces — the dark and the light — are in a classic Star Wars play, which is a desperate moment.”

60 Minutes airs at 7:30 pm on CBS.
