Jimmy Kimmel says Jo Koy should get a Golden Globes do-over: 'I think he learned all the lessons'

The seasoned Oscars host contends a do-over would be "very smart."

Seasoned awards show host Jimmy Kimmel believes Jo Koy should get a Golden Globes do-over after a disastrous debut earlier this year.

Kimmel, set to emcee the upcoming Academy Awards for the fourth time, addressed the flak Koy received at the ceremony in conversation with The Hollywood Reporter. When the outlet noted that Koy "went after folks in the room" when he wasn't "part of Hollywood in the way" that Kimmel was, Kimmel conceded that "it's a lot easier for me than it is for Jo Koy."

"It’s like if a stranger walks up to you and goes, 'Nice shirt, Tom Selleck.' If it’s one of your friends, you don’t take offense to it, but if it’s somebody you don’t know, you might smack him one," Kimmel said, pitching a do-over. "Not that I have any business programming the Golden Globes, but I think they should let Jo Koy host the show next year and give him a shot at doing it over."

"It would be very smart," Kimmel added. "I think he learned all the lessons, and he’s a funny guy. I think it would be nice for everyone."

Koy famously elicited some boos at the Golden Globes in January, delivering jokes that largely fell flat (like the NFL's excessive coverage of Taylor Swift and Barbie's "big boobies") and noting that he only had a few days to prepare for the big gig. "Yo, I got the gig 10 days ago," he said on stage. "You want a perfect monologue? Shut up. You're kidding me, right? I wrote some of these, and they're the ones you're laughing at."

Comedians like Steve Martin, Kevin Hart, and Michael Che have come to Koy's defense, all noting that hosting a live awards show is not for the faint of heart. And Koy, for his part, has also said that he'd "love" to return to the Golden Globes stage — but "with five months, not nine days" to prepare.

The 2024 Oscars will air March 10 at 4 p.m. PST/7 p.m. EST on ABC.
