Jimmy Kimmel is back with new episodes for the new year — and he had plenty to say in his first monologue back.

On Monday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the late-night host addressed the swirl of controversy that began last week when New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers implied that Kimmel’s name might be on a newly released list of associates of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Kimmel hit back hard in Monday’s monologue, reiterating that he wasn’t on the list and he’s never met Epstein, but because of Rodgers’ accusations, “a lot of delusional people think that I’m meeting up with Tom Hanks and Oprah at Shakey’s once a week to eat pizza and drink the blood of children.”

Kimmel went on to explain that Rodgers’ grudge against him dates back to some jokes Kimmel told about Rodgers early last year, calling him a “tin-foil hatter” for suggesting that news about UFOs was a planned distraction from the upcoming release of the Epstein list. So to retaliate, Rodgers “decided to insinuate that I’m a pedophile,” Kimmel said. He added that Rodgers must think that “because God gave him the ability to throw a ball, he’s smarter than everyone else,” tying it into Rodgers’ COVID conspiracy theories: “A guy who went to community college, then got into Cal on a football scholarship and didn’t graduate, someone who never spent a minute studying the human body, is an expert in the field of immunology… Aaron got two A’s on his report card, and they were both in the word ‘Aaron.'”

Kimmel didn’t let up, labeling Rodgers “a hamster-brained man” and adding: “Aaron Rodgers is too arrogant to know how ignorant he is. They let him host Jeopardy! for two weeks; now he knows everything.” He emphasized that Rodgers is entitled to his opinion, but “saying someone is a pedophile is not an opinion, nor is it trash talk,” taking a jab at ESPN host Pat McAfee’s apology for Rodgers’ comments. Kimmel also conceded that he makes plenty of jokes about people, but those are carefully vetted and based in fact, “because the truth still matters.” When he gets something wrong, he apologizes, and he hopes Rodgers will do the same, “which is what a decent person would do… but I bet he won’t.”

He wrapped up his seven-minute diatribe with this plea to any conservatives listening: “If you are a member of a group that thinks it’s OK to randomly call someone a child molester because you don’t like what that person has to say, maybe you should rethink being a part of that group.”

Rodgers responded Tuesday on McAfee’s show, stopping short of an apology but clarifying that he doesn’t think Kimmel is a pedophile: “I’m not stupid enough to accuse you of that with absolutely zero evidence. That’s ridiculous.” He also condemned fans who were labeling Kimmel a pedophile after his comments: “Don’t do that in my name. Don’t do that at all. Those are serious accusations meant for people who are on the list.”
