Ozark star Jason Bateman was met with a surprise from way back when he stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live Thursday night. Kimmel showed a clip of Bateman from his first appearance on The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson from September 19, 1984, when Bateman was just 15 years old. Carson asked Bateman about his dating life, to which the young actor gave very mature answers, but that wasn’t the point of showing the clip.

The point for Kimmel was the sweatshirt that Bateman was wearing. Following the clip, Kimmel quickly brought out a couple pictures of Bateman from around that same time. One was a promotional photo from Bateman’s short-lived sitcom It’s Your Move, and the other was a picture of him from Bop magazine. In both pictures, Bateman is wearing the same sweatshirt he wore on The Tonight Show.

Bateman quipped, “Guess who had a favorite sweatshirt.” Kimmel replied, “Guess who’s got another one.”

Kimmel then pulled out an adult size version of the same sweatshirt that Bateman clearly loved so much nearly 30 years ago. Bateman eagerly put it on and posed.

Video Transcript

JIMMY KIMMEL: In your publicity photo for "It's Your Move", which is the show you're promoting at that time.

JASON BATEMAN: It's the same sweater.

JIMMY KIMMEL: You're wearing the same sweater. And then we have "Bop" magazine in which, guess what you're wearing? Jason--

JASON BATEMAN: No.

JIMMY KIMMEL: The very same sweater.

KYLIE MAR: Jason Bateman stopped by "Jimmy Kimmel Live" Thursday night to promote the fourth and final season of "Ozark", and Bateman and Kimmel took a trip down memory lane to when the actor first spoke with the great Johnny Carson. On September 19, 1984 at the age of 15, Bateman made his first appearance on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" where he wore the same sweatshirt, and he and Carson talked about his dating life.

JASON BATEMAN: I don't really want to go out with a girl you know because she likes me because I'm an actor or something like that. You know I wanted to go out because-- because she likes me as a person.

JOHNNY CARSON: They use the term going steady anymore?

JASON BATEMAN: That's, well, back-- like about 10 years ago they used going steady.

JOHNNY CARSON: Oh.

KYLIE MAR: So Kimmel thought it only appropriate to give Bateman the sweatshirt he clearly loved so much.

JASON BATEMAN: Guess who had a favorite sweatshirt.

JIMMY KIMMEL: Guess who's got another one. So that's a little something, I don't you know--

JASON BATEMAN: Let's have a look. Oh, great. Wonderful.

JIMMY KIMMEL: It looks very good.

KYLIE MAR: Being the showbiz vet that he is, Bateman stayed close to his mic. And he was quick to point out that it made things just a bit awkward.

JIMMY KIMMEL: Jason, you have been on television for a really, really long time.

JASON BATEMAN: God, I hope people are tuning in right now.

JIMMY KIMMEL: I do want to get back to-- it looks like your puppet died.
