Brandi Carlile shared a fond recollection of the late Jimmy Buffett during an all-star tribute concert at the Hollywood Bowl on Thursday night, recalling how he would use her name to make friends with “lesbian fisherwomen.”
During a speech leading into her cover performance of “Come Monday,” Carlile revealed that she bonded with Buffett over their shared love of fishing. “I could call Jimmy up, it didn’t matter where I was, and he’d have some salty dog captain come out and pick me up and take me fishing — even if he couldn’t be there — off the drop-off, off of Anegada, or in the Gulf,” she said.

Carlile continued, “He just treated me like gold, and he used to go out on the water and make friends with lesbian fisherwomen by telling him that he knew Brandi Carlile and that they were fishing buddies.”
Buffett didn’t keep the lesbian fisherwomen to himself, either. Carlile told the audience that he would also text her and say, “Hey, Brandi, I met some more lesbians. I gave them your phone number. Next time you’re out in the Cape and the stripers are in, they’re going to call you.”

Paul McCartney and The Eagles (performing “Let It Be”), Dave Grohl, Sheryl Crow, Jon Bon Jovi, and Zac Brown were among the many artists who came together to pay tribute to Buffett.
Buffett passed away this past September at the age of 76 after a prolonged battle with skin cancer and lymphoma. His final album, Equal Strain on All Parts, was posthumously released in November.
Carlile is coming off a recent appearance on Sesame Street and took part in Joni Mitchell’s Grammys performance for the ages earlier this year. She has a scattering of shows slated for later this year — including a pair of concerts accompanying Mitchell at the Hollywood Bowl. Get your tickets here.
