Jim Carrey says Mitch McConnell is worse than Osama bin Laden in new cartoon

Jim Carrey is continuing his series of no-holds-barred political cartoons with a new piece dubbing Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell a worse threat to the United States than Osama bin Laden.

The comedian, 57, tweeted a drawing Wednesday afternoon that depicted a hand dipping a $100 bill into a bucket of blood, adding a caption to make it clear who the subject was intended to be.

"10,000 gun deaths in 2019 and the year is far from over," Carrey wrote. "What Osama bin Laden did to us was terrible but he doesn't hold a candle to Mitch McConnell."

Carrey's cartoon came a day after McConnell told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt that any gun-control legislation would have to wait until President Donald Trump decides on measures that the administration could support.

Over the Labor Day holiday weekend, a gunman opened fire on a highway during a routine traffic stop in Odessa, Texas, killing seven and injuring 25 others.

“Well, we’re in a discussion about what to do on the gun issue in the wake of these horrendous shootings,” McConnell said. “I said several weeks ago that if the president took a position on a bill so that we knew we would actually be making a law and not just having serial votes, I'd be happy to put it on the floor.”

USA TODAY has reached out to a representative for McConnell for comment.

Carrey previously told USA TODAY that he doesn't see political art as a career move, but instead as his compulsion to speak against an administration he considers evil.

His first caricature, an image of Trump as a killer clown with his finger on the (presumably nuclear) button, was published in a magazine the day before the 2016 president election. After Trump’s surprise victory, he veered in the opposite direction: “I just chaotically scribbled my face in just complete disillusionment and worry about what happened.”

He's done hundreds of drawings to date, ranging from whimsical – Trump’s face as a piece of toast – to crude (one depicts the president puckering up next to Russian president Vladimir Putin’s bare behind).

While Trump is Carrey's favorite subject, presidential allies including Fox News host Sean Hannity, personal attorney Rudolph Giuliani and Vice President Mike Pence, have faced the wrath of his pen. Others, including special prosecutor Robert Mueller, have received flattering portraits.

The illustrations, which Carrey draws with felt-tip markers, are fueled by inspiration. “They just keep coming," he says. "They just happen. Some concern comes up and some twist comes out of the news."
