Jim Carrey Is Not Reprising His Role for a “Grinch” Sequel Despite Reports, Actor's Rep Says

Jim Carrey is not planning on returning to Whoville anytime soon, contrary to recent online rumors.

Despite reports online claiming a sequel to 2000's live-action How the Grinch Stole Christmas was in the works with Carrey attached to return, a rep for the actor tells PEOPLE those reports are inaccurate.

"There is no truth to Jim reprising his role as the Grinch in a sequel to The Grinch," Carrey's rep said.

A spokesperson for Universal Pictures did not respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

Carrey, now 61, starred as the Grinch in an adaptation of Dr. Seuss's 1957 book released by Universal Pictures in November 2000. Ron Howard directed the movie, which saw Carrey covered head-to-toe in green fur to portray the Grinch as he plots to ruin the holidays for the citizens of Whoville.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas also starred Taylor Momsen, Jeffrey Tambor, Christine Baranski, Molly Shannon and Anthony Hopkins, who narrated the movie.

The story was subsequently remade as an animated film by Illumination and Universal in 2018, titled Dr. Seuss' The Grinch, featuring Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice star.

Carrey said during interviews for his 2022 movie Sonic the Hedgehog 2 that he was "retiring" from acting work after nearly four decades in the entertainment industry.

"It depends," he explained to Access Hollywood at the time. "If the angels bring some sort of script that's written in gold ink, that says to me that it's going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road. But I'm taking a break."

"I really like my quiet life, and I really love putting paint on canvas, and I really love my spiritual life, and I feel like — and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists – I have enough," he added. "I've done enough. I am enough."
