Jill Scott getting dragged into the depths of hell for defending Chris Brown on social media wasn’t on our 2024 bingo card–but here we are. On Sunday (April 21), the Grammy-winning songstress decided to praise the controversial R&B star as his feud with Migos member Quavo reached disturbing heights.

Last week, Brown and Quavo took turns on wax insulting each other. Brown insisted that the emcee had romantic relations with one of his exes, Quavo brought up domestic abuse allegations against the singer, Brown countered by saying Quavo should have died instead of late Migos member Takeoff (and Quavo’s nephew) who was shot to death two years ago.

Yes, it’s a lot.

The quality of Brown’s diss track, “Weakest Link,” apparently left quite the impression on Scott who posted on X: “@chrisbrown is amazing. How does ANYBODY sing like THAT? Dance, look, Act and Rap… like THAT? Beyond gifted. It appears, exceptional people have to go through exceptional 🔥. There’s nothing to debate.”

When someone replied to Scott’s words “I think the women he’s abused would disagree,” the “Golden” singer told a bizarre anecdote about her mother’s “ex-husband” being abusive but that his talent seemingly made it forgiveable.

“I doubt it,” she replied. “My Mother’s ex husband was a mean, violent human AND he could lay foundation better than anyone in my city. What he did with cement was awe inspiring. We got away. He got a raise and praise for his ability. God dealt with the rest.” Scott also said she forgave him because he had his own trauma to deal with.

The backlash she faced was immense but predictable, with the musician trying to explain that her words were merely a result of her compassion. “Look. Years of prayer, therapy, self reflection, & making every effort to keep my feet on the ground has made me compassionate for other human beings…We ARE a living testimony,” she stated.

It’s unknown why Scott decided to put herself in the line of fire, especially when Brown doesn’t need anyone defending him. He has been accused of abuse multiple times over the course of his career, as well as colorism when it comes to the women he keeps around him.

Perhaps even more disturbing is the fact that the same courtesy that Black women like Scott—and Kelly Rowland and Ciara—have extended to Brown is never extended to them. Scott tweeted on Monday (April 22) that after listening to friends, she came to the conclusion that the online criticism she faced showed how some folks simply wanted “the highs of war.”

Honestly, she set herself up for one by mentioning Brown’s name in the first place. Instead of praising his talent and controversial reputation, Scott should be uplifting his alleged victims instead.
