Jill Duggar Dillard is opening up about a tough moment involving her husband, Derick Dillard, and her father, Jim Bob Duggar.

The Counting On alum, 32, spoke about her husband’s rocky relationship with her father after distancing herself from her controversial family in Tuesday’s episode of Christy Carlson Romano’s Vulnerable podcast.

“It used to be really great. Derick trusted my dad and my dad trusted him,” Jill said of the two men’s former dynamic. “But once we started having some differences — we weren’t falling in line with everything — it got a little rocky there to the point where Derick had to have some really hard conversations with my dad and more recently to the point where he was standing up to protect me and saying, ‘This not okay the way you’re treating your daughter.’”

As things worsened between the two, Derick, 34, threatened to take legal action against Jim Bob, 58. “I think my dad lost the picture when Derick was telling him basically ‘If you keep contacting her directly, then I will have to file a protective order,’” she recalled.

“We hope for the future that things can get better, but we’re not rushing things either with my family,” she added. “We want to have good relationships, we want there to be better trust,” she explained.

While speaking with PEOPLE ahead of the release of her debut memoir Counting the Cost in September, Jill shared, "My father and I do not have one-on-one contact.”

In PEOPLE’s exclusive excerpt of the book, the former reality star detailed an incident in which she compared her father’s treatment of her as being “worse” than her eldest brother, Josh Duggar, who molested her and several of her siblings when they were younger and is now serving more than 12 years in prison on charges of downloading and possessing images of child sex abuse.

“You treat me like I’m a prodigal who’s turned her back on you. You treat me worse than you treat my pedophile brother,” Jill wrote.

Jim Bob and wife Michelle Duggar responded to her claims in a statement to PEOPLE: "We love all of our children very much. As with any family, few things are more painful than conflicts or problems among those you love. ... We do not believe the best way to resolve conflicts, facilitate forgiveness and reconciliation, or to communicate through difficulties is through the media or in a public forum so we will not comment."
