The shocking murder of 20-year-old rapper XXXTentacion has again opened the debate between separating art from an artist. It’s no secret that the Florida native, born Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy, made headlines for his music as well as his history of violence, including domestic abuse allegations, and homophobic statements. However, fellow recording artist Jidenna is speaking up to draw a line between XXX’s abuse allegations and his attempts to turn his life around, and he’s using Malcolm X to make his point.

Like many in the music community, Jidenna took to social media to share his condolences for the rising rap star tweeting on Monday (June 18), “RIP @XXXTentacion no one can be so self-righteous that they are happy when a youth dies. The young still have the capability to reform. God bless the kids.”

The 33-year-old “Little Bit More” rapper went on to clarify that he was never supported XXXTentacion’s actions, “especially his domestic violence,” before adding a Malcolm X comparison.

“For those who are so woke that their compassion is asleep, remember this…if Malcolm X was killed at the age of 20, he would have died an abuser, a thief, an addict, and a narrow-minded depressed & violent criminal,” Jidenna wrote. “So, I believe in change for the young.”

Jidenna also clarified that his intent wasn’t to actually compare Malcolm to XXXTentacion, “but to point out that a young lost kid can evolve into something greater.”
